Breast lift

The Breast Lift, or mastopexy, procedure is ideal for patients with sagging or drooping breasts that have developed either over time due to the onset of age, following dramatic weight loss, or following pregnancy and breastfeeding, or occur naturally due to basic genetics. Breast lift surgery restores the elasticity of the female breast tissue by removing excess sagging tissue in the breast, and reshaping and repositioning the breast mound and nipple. See also the breast augmentation page for more information!

General information

A side effect of aging or weight loss is the loss of skin tone and elasticity. When breast sagging is moderate and the breast is relatively small, breast augmentation with autologous fat or breast augmentation with a silicone implant may be sufficient to shape the breast. The advantage is that this technique leaves little scarring around the nipple and along the breast. If the sagging of the breast is more pronounced, some of the skin and fat must be removed. A scar around the areola and extending vertically is then often necessary.

Treatment procedure
At the Bellefontaine Clinic

Before the procedure

During the first consultation, we will make sure that a breast lift is a procedure that will meet your expectations. We clarify questions about general health, family history of the breast, and we measure various breast parameters. An ultrasound examination and/or mammogram before the operation is standard. Smoking cessation is strongly advised 3 weeks before and 3 weeks after the operation.

During the procedure

On the day of the breast lift, we take photos of the breasts in a standing position before the operation. Then we draw the future contour of the breast also in standing position. An anaesthetist will inform you about the planned general anaesthesia. The procedure takes about 2-3 hours and is performed under general anaesthesia. For moderate sagging, a breast augmentation with implants or fat is performed and leaves little scarring. For more severe sagging, another incision around the areola and vertically under the areola is necessary. The excess skin is removed and a smaller, firmer breast is formed, the areola is reduced and the nipple is lifted to its new position.

After the procedure

After the operation, the chest is immobilized with a tight bandage. You must wear a sports bra for 6 weeks after the operation. If your operation requires a vertical scar and around the areola, the stitches can be removed 3 weeks after the operation, the remaining stitches will be removed. From 3 weeks onwards you can treat the scar with a special scar ointment and silicone patches.

Risks and side effects

Directly after breast reduction, swelling and sensory disturbances may occur in the chest area. These usually disappear after a few weeks. A disturbance of the nipple vascularisation is also possible. The ability to breastfeed may be limited or even eliminated after the operation. Unsightly scars may appear. Post-operative bleeding and infections are rare.
