Acne is caused by inflammation of the hair follicles and sebum in the skin. Acne commonly occurs on the face, back, chest and neck. We generally see different types of spots at different stages of development. All of them can leave permanent scars if not treated properly.
What causes acne?
- – Changes in male sex hormones or androgens that occur during puberty.
- – Infection with Cutibacterium acnes
- – Washing and/or exfoliating the face too frequently
- – Certain types of food, such as dairy products and sweets (note that this only affects some people)

- – Certain diseases associated with hormonal changes, such as polycystic ovary syndrome

What to avoid if you have acne:
- – Avoid starchy foods, sugary foods, dairy products and fried foods
- – Avoid using overly rich creams during acne flare-ups, as these can easily clog pores.
- – Stress can cause acne flare-ups. Exercise regularly or do activities that relieve stress.
- – Do not touch your spots, especially when they are inflamed, as this can lead to permanent scarring.
What are the common treatments for inflammatory acne?
The most common treatments for acne during the inflammatory phase are antibiotics (e.g. clindamycin or erythromycin) or oral vitamin A-based medications (e.g. tretinoin). There are other types of medications that can be applied to the skin to help destroy bacteria and reduce inflammation (e.g. benzoyl peroxide and azelaic acid).

The Pico Plus laser is a well-known laser treatment for acne. The Pico Plus laser stimulates collagen production, promoting skin rejuvenation and reducing the appearance of acne scars. In addition to its action against acne scars, it reduces the size of enlarged pores, diminishes pigmentation spots, and improves skin tone and texture. Several sessions are necessary to achieve optimal results.
Microneedling
As its name suggests, microneedling uses fine needles that prick the skin. After the treatment, your skin will produce more collagen to heal the small wounds caused by the needles. Microneedling is most effective on indented (rather than raised) acne scars.
