Breast augmentation: 8 things you need to know about Motiva Ergonomix breast implants

Published at - Breast augmentation

20 years ago, when I started my training in plastic and aesthetic surgery, breast augmentation using implants in private or university clinics was mainly done using textured implants (which have a rough layer on the surface). A few years ago, studies showed that textured breast implants could lead to chronic inflammation over the long term. This problem led to the development of ultra-smooth textured implants such as Motiva Ergonomix® implants.

When it comes to breast augmentation, choosing the right silicone implants is extremely important. Whether it’s the size, the shape, the manufacturer, the consistency, the surface of the implant or the cost, there is certain information you absolutely must know.

8 things you need to know about Motiva breast implants

What are the advantages of Motiva Ergonomix® implants?

Motiva implants feel slightly more natural to the touch thanks to the use of ultra-modern gel structures. These implants pose fewer problems of chronic inflammation thanks to the implant surface using nanotechnology to make them ultra-smooth. Their gel is designed to mimic anatomical implants (even though they always look rounder than real anatomical implants – I’ll let you enjoy our before-and-after photos and videos to see for yourself). Motiva Ergonomix® implants also feature a special protective barrier to prevent unintentional silicone leakage (Blueseal technology).

Is the Motiva Ergonomix® implant a round implant, an anatomical implant or something in between?

Here’s my point of view: the Motiva Ergonomix® implant is neither a round nor an anatomical implant, but rather something in between. Let me explain: the special feature of Ergonomix® implants is that the implant adapts to your movements. When you’re lying down, the implant takes on a round shape and when you’re standing up, it takes on a slightly more teardrop shape, but it doesn’t completely fit. On the other hand, it is not exactly anatomically shaped, which means that the final appearance is a little rounder than that of an anatomically shaped implant (you can see our before-and-after photos and videos to see for yourself). There is one exception to this rule: if you already have enough gland and fat before the operation (i.e. a breast volume of around B before the operation), in this case the implant will be well covered by your natural tissues and the result will be even closer to the anatomical shape. What’s more, Motiva Ergonomix® implants are more flexible than conventional silicone implants, giving your breasts a more natural feel, even with the implant.

Are Motiva Ergonomix® implants safe?

Current studies show that Motiva Ergonomix® implants significantly reduce the risk of chronic inflammation (like the capsules around the implant). Many patients also wondered whether having a silicone implant would affect their ability to breastfeed. With the right surgical technique, the ability to breastfeed is not affected at all after breast surgery.

What are the properties of silicone?

The material used for implants is called silicone. It is a strong, elastic material made from silicon. Silicone is also often used in creams, for example. Silicone medical products are even used for heart valves, not least because of their good compatibility with the body. Today, we are using the 6th generation of silicone implants, which are much more compatible with the body than previous implants.

Why do Motiva Ergonomix® implants have an ultra-smooth surface?

We distinguish between different types of implant surface: smooth, microtextured and macrotextured. Motiva breast implants have a special ultra-smooth surface with a nanotexture, which sets them apart from the current texturing standards of other implant manufacturers. We now know that the rough implant surfaces (micro- or macrotextured anatomical implants) that have been used for a long time can, over time, lead to chronic inflammation of the body (around 1 to 2% of capsule around the implant with textured implants). With their nano-surface, Motiva implants are among the ultra-smooth implants and are therefore particularly well tolerated. This technology greatly reduces the risk of capsular fibrosis around the implant. If you want teardrop-shaped implants, we recommend that you use microtextured surfaces. We no longer use marotextured implants at Clinique Bellefontaine.

What should I do if a fibrotic capsule appears?

The Motiva implant warranty programme is very comprehensive. It grants a lifetime exchange programme in case of symptomatic capsular fibrosis and shell rupture. If you opt for a Motiva implant with microchip, the manufacturer offers a ‘5Y Motiva Program™’ with financial assistance of up to CHF 2,500 per implant involved.

What is the BlueSeal protective barrier for Motiva Ergonomix® implants?

Your safety is our priority. Breast implants are still manufactured by hand under sterile conditions. Motiva implants feature a unique BlueSeal layer to help identify implants whose shells have been damaged during the manufacturing process. This protective barrier gives the implants a bluish sheen. Thanks to this blue indicator layer, we and our quality control staff at Clinique Bellefontaine can recognise whether an implant has been damaged – something that has never happened to us before.

When should Motiva Ergonomix® implants be renewed?

Motiva implants with microchips (Q Inside Safety Technology®) are guaranteed for life. If they need to be replaced due to implant complications, Motiva will cover the cost of new implants. Motiva is the first silicone implant manufacturer to offer its implants with a small microchip. A 15-digit code is recorded on this chip. We can read the code using a special reader so that you can prove at any time which implants you have received for the lifetime guarantee programme. With other manufacturers, you always need your implant passport. Of course, Motiva also provides you with a standard implant passport. If, despite these advantages, you don’t want a chip, the manufacturer also offers Motiva implants without a chip. Of course, the chip does not react to airport checks.

Conclusion

Motiva implants are of extremely high quality and greatly reduce the risk of chronic inflammation. The Motiva implant gives a slightly rounder shape than an anatomical implant, even for Motiva Ergonomix implants. If, however, you opt for drop-shaped anatomical implants, we use microtextured implants and you should be aware that the risk of capsule formation is higher in the long term.
