FAQ
Liposuction Lausanne

Am I a good candidate for liposuction?

The most suitable candidates for liposuction are those who are stable in weight, have a body mass index below 30, and have localized fat deposits that are resistant to diet or sport. In principle, anyone in good general health is suitable for liposuction.

Will I lose weight after liposuction?

No or very little. Fat removed is measured in volume, not kilos. 1 liter of fat weighs much less than 1 kilo. The aim of liposuction is to transform the silhouette, not to lose weight.

Can removed fat return?

It’s a question we’re often asked during consultations. As long as weight remains stable, fat does not return. Weight is considered stable when it does not change by more than 3 to 4 kilos after the operation. The fat cells removed do not have the capacity to multiply. However, liposuction does not protect against weight gain. Remaining fat cells may increase in volume again if weight increases by more than 3 to 4 kilos after the procedure.

Is the result long-lasting after liposuction?

The result is long-lasting as long as weight remains stable after the operation. Weight is considered stable when there is no change of more than 3 to 4 kilos after liposuction.

How much fat can be removed during a liposuction session?

For personal safety, we remove no more than 5 liters of fat per session. With conventional liposuction, we generally remove 2 to 3 liters of fat.

Is it possible to treat different areas in a single liposuction

Yes, it is possible to treat several areas in a single liposuction session. The limiting factors are the amount of fat to be removed, which must not exceed 5 liters during the session, and the amount of local anesthetic used, which depends on the patient’s base weight.

What does liposuction cost?

We attach great importance to a transparent pricing policy. From the consultation to the operation, including post-procedure consultations, post-operative medication and panthy, everything is included in the price. For liposuction of the abdomen, we ask for an ultrasound of the abdomen before the operation. This is usually paid for by the health insurance company. We can give an estimate of the price when we receive photos of the areas to be treated. The final price is only given during a consultation. There are no hidden costs or unpleasant surprises.

How safe is liposuction?

The “frequent” and partially avoidable risks after liposuction are irregularities and seromas. The risk of irregularities can be minimized by performing standing post-procedure checks, and making corrections directly if necessary. Seroma is the accumulation of fluid in the tissues under the skin. Sitting or lying down for the first 2 weeks after surgery drastically reduces the risk of seroma. Other risks, such as infection or bleeding, are very rare.

What are the advantages and/or disadvantages of liposuction versus cryolipolysis treatment?

Cryolipolysis acts primarily on superficial fat. The advantage of cryolipolysis is that you can resume your normal activities immediately 24 hours after treatment, and it is generally less expensive than liposuction. The disadvantage is that a maximum of 25% of fat can be lost, and there’s no way of knowing in advance on whom it will work best. Liposuction has the advantage of being effective. Fat is physically removed. In some areas, almost all the fat can be removed. The disadvantage of liposuction is that recovery is slower, with longer periods off sport or work than with cryolipolysis.

When can I return to work after liposuction?

For office work, it is possible to return to work after 3 to 4 days. Activities requiring standing should be carried out 2 weeks after the operation.

When can I resume sport after liposuction?

After liposuction, you should refrain from sport for 3 weeks. If lipofilling is performed, it is preferable to give up sport for 8 weeks.

What should I look out for before liposuction?

A blood test is required prior to surgery. When liposuction of the abdomen is desired, an ultrasound scan for hernia is systematically performed. Smoking should ideally be stopped 3 weeks before and 3 weeks after liposuction. Blood-thinning drugs such as NSAIDs should be stopped 10 days before your liposuction.

What should I look out for after liposuction?

A panthy, also known as a compression girdle, is put in place immediately after the operation. It supports the skin’s adaptation processes and should be worn for three weeks, day and night. During the first night after the operation, liquid from the tumescent solution will flow out of the small incisions. The first shower can be taken 48 hours after liposuction. Antibiotic prophylaxis is required for three days. Pain is often cramp-like, appearing a few hours after the procedure. They are at their most intense after 3 to 4 days, and generally disappear after 1 week. The first shower can be taken 48 hours after liposuction. It is important to remain in a sitting and lying position for the first 2 weeks.

Will it hurt during liposuction?

We offer liposuction under local anesthesia, deep sedation or general anesthesia. Good candidates for liposuction under local anaesthetic are those with a moderate to high threshold of resistance to physical pain. During the consultation, we gather the necessary information to assess your pain tolerance. Some areas, such as the abdomen, are more sensitive. Under deep sedation or general anaesthesia, you will feel no pain. On average, we operate on one out of every two patients under local anaesthetic, and one out of every two under deep sedation or general anaesthetic.

How long do I have to wear a panthy or compression garment after liposuction?

After surgery, you must wear a panthy day and night for 3 weeks. We provide you with a panthy immediately after the operation. Our panthys are made by Marena ® and have a protective antiseptic layer on the inside. This can be removed for showering. It is important to check their position regularly. The upper part of the panthy should be placed exactly at the level of the submammary fold. If the top of the panthy slips down, it risks leaving a permanent imprint.

What are plates and how long do I have to wear them?

Plates are medical adhesive foams designed to reduce the risk of seroma. Plates are worn only after high-definition liposuction, or sometimes in patients at risk of developing a seroma. After high-definition liposuction, we use plates on specific areas to reduce the risk of seroma. Plates are removed and replaced after each shower. Plates must be worn for 2 weeks.

Why is it important to sit or lie down for the first 2 weeks after liposuction?

Plates are medical adhesive foams designed to reduce the risk of seroma. Plates are worn only after high-definition liposuction, or sometimes in patients at risk of developing a seroma. After high-definition liposuction, we use plates on specific areas to reduce the risk of seroma. Plates are removed and replaced after each shower. You must wear the plates for 2 weeks.

What is the size and visibility of the incisions?

As a general rule, incisions are between 3 and 5 mm in size. Thanks to the minimal size of the scar and its positioning in discreet areas, the scar remains barely visible. That’s the magic of liposuction.

Should I avoid the sun and solarium after liposuction?

The sun should be avoided for the first 4 weeks after surgery. After that, you’ll need to apply a sunscreen 50+ cream to the scars until they turn white. Depending on skin type, it may take 3 to 12 months for the scar to turn white. Once the scar has turned white, there is no longer any need to use sunscreen.

What is the best way to treat liposuction scars?

Here’s how we treat scars at Clinique Bellefontaine. 3 weeks after the operation, you can start massaging the scar with a Keli-Med healing cream 3 times a day. The most important thing is to avoid the sun or apply a 50+ sunblock cream to the scars until they turn white.

When can I take a shower after liposuction?

Showering is permitted 48 hours after the operation. After disinfecting the small scars, you can apply a Tegaderm waterproof dressing to the scars, which you can keep for subsequent showers. It is important to put on the compression garment and/or plates after the shower.

Is liposuction recommended in cases of obesity?

Liposuction is not a good indication for obese patients. It is not a means of weight loss. Patients exceeding a body mass index – BMI – of 30 to 32 kg/m2 have a significantly higher risk of post-operative complications, which is why we do not operate on these patients. However, in carefully selected cases in patients not exceeding a BMI of 32 kg/m2, diffuse excess fat can benefit from liposuction and help secondary weight loss. This is known as starter liposuction

What is a wave or irregularity?

A wave or irregularity is a marked depression that forms in a liposuction area. It can occur if too much fat has been removed in relation to the surrounding area. To avoid this problem, a standing control is systematically carried out at the end of the procedure, enabling the necessary corrections to be made to avoid waves.

Why perform standing checks at the end of the procedure?

The same body in the upright position does not look the same as the same body in the supine position. The standing check at the end of the procedure enables us to check whether there are any waves or, on the contrary, whether any areas still need to be liposuctioned. A correction can then be made directly at the end of the procedure. It is systematically performed after any liposuction. When deep sedation or general anaesthesia is used, we wait until the patient is sufficiently awake to perform these checks. This check-up has the great advantage of minimizing the risk of waves after the operation, and therefore of avoiding the need for touch-ups 6 months later.

Is it normal to have nodules and hardening after liposuction?

Yes, it is normal to have nodules and hardening after liposuction. One week after liposuction, the treated area begins to indurate. Swelling and induration diminish after 2 to 3 weeks and definitively after 3 to 6 months. To avoid irregularities and hardening of the treated areas due to soft tissue healing, LPG Endermologie treatment is strongly recommended one week after liposuction. LPG Endermologie can also be used to reduce minor irregularities and cellulite

How long do swellings remain visible and how can we speed up their regression?

Swelling generally appears one week after the procedure and lasts approximately 2 to 6 weeks, depending on the areas treated. LPG Endermologie treatment is strongly recommended one week after liposuction to reduce swelling. Professional lymphatic drainage can also help.

Can the skin sag after liposuction?

It should be borne in mind that with age, or in people who have experienced significant weight variations, tissue elasticity diminishes, which can sometimes lead to sagging of the skin after liposuction. In borderline cases, we first propose liposuction, which has the advantage of leaving only a very small scar. If the skin has indeed slackened after liposuction, we then propose a facelift of the area 6 months after liposuction. However, this is not a frequent occurrence.

Is there any way to support the restructuring of the skin after the operation?

With modern liposuction techniques, where superficial fat can also be removed depending on the areas to be treated, skin tightening can be achieved with a technique known as “fine tunnelling”. LPG Endermologie treatments can also, from the first week after liposuction, further promote and support skin firming.

Will liposuction eliminate cellulite or stretch marks?

Liposuction does not correct cellulite or stretch marks. Liposuction reduces the volume of fat and transforms the silhouette without correcting the appearance of the skin.

How long should I wait after pregnancy before undergoing liposuction?

We generally wait 6 months after childbirth for the body, and especially the tummy, to recover from the physical changes. It is also important to wait until the end of breastfeeding before undergoing liposuction.

Can I have a second liposuction?

Yes, it is possible to perform a second liposuction if a significant layer of fat remains. This is particularly the case if the surgeon has only removed the deep layer of fat.

What is high-definition liposuction?

The aim of high-definition liposuction is to remove deep and superficial fat to harmoniously accentuate the body’s muscles in the abdomen, chest and hips. High-definition liposuction is suitable for patients who exercise regularly, have good skin quality and a body mass index not exceeding 27 to 30 kg/

What is deep fat and superficial fat?

In the body, the layer of fat between the skin and muscles is separated in the middle by a fibrous layer called fascia. There is fat above this fascia, called superficial fat, and fat below it, called deep fat. Older liposuction techniques only removed deep fat, for fear of irregularity. As liposuction techniques have greatly evolved in recent years, we can now also remove superficial fat, depending on the area.
