Scar treatment

Surgery and burns sometimes leave embarrassing scars. These can be bothersome from a purely aesthetic point of view, or can lead to severe functional restriction. During a consultation at Clinique Bellefontaine, we can advise you individually on existing corrective options and whether conservative treatment may be sufficient.

How is scar surgery performed?

Before the procedure

The patient's health issues are first clarified. The scar to be corrected is discussed and drawn. There are several methods for correcting a scar. Together with you, we decide which procedure will give you the best possible "aesthetic" result. The decision whether to treat a scar conservatively or surgically depends on the age, type, color, quality, area and elasticity of the scar and the skin surrounding it. In order not to jeopardize the wound healing process after surgical correction, it is generally advisable not to smoke around 14 days before the operation.

During the procedure

The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic. The scar is excised with as little tissue loss as possible. The subcutaneous tissue is specially prepared so that we can close the wound with as little tension as possible. At the end of the procedure, we apply special dressings to the wound to keep the scar as tension-free as possible.

After the procedure

After excision of the scar, the stitches should be removed within 7 days on the face and 14 to 21 days on the body. During this period, you should refrain from sports for at least 3 weeks. 3 weeks after the operation, you can treat the scar with a special scar ointment, silicone patches and, optionally, compression bandages. You should avoid the sun or use an ointment with a sun protection factor of 50 + for as long as the scar is red.

Risks and side effects

Local swelling and bruising may occur during the first 2 weeks. Infections and hematomas are very rare. Sensory disturbances generally disappear a few weeks after surgery. Pathological scarring, hypertrophic scarring or keloids cannot be ruled out.

General information

Even very small scars can disrupt your personal well-being. The development of a scar depends on many different factors. These include its depth, the type of injury, the thickness of the skin, the location of the damaged area, and the type of care taken immediately afterwards. If the scar becomes unsightly a few months after an operation or injury, it can usually be treated with silicone patches, silicone gels, scar ointment, corticosteroid injections and, optionally, compression bandaging. If the scar is still unsightly 18 or 24 months after an accident or injury, it can be corrected surgically. Other scar treatment options include correction by transferring your own fat or by medical microneedling.
