Thigh lift or cruroplasty

A thigh lift or cruroplasty is a procedure that involves removing skin (and often fat) from the inner thighs. After significant weight fluctuation or simply with age, excess skin can accumulate in an unattractive manner on the inner thighs. Unfortunately, it is not possible to “tighten” the skin of the thighs and achieve firm skin through exercise, creams, or diet changes. In this case, a thigh lift can improve the silhouette. The procedure involves removing excess skin and fatty tissue from the inner thighs. In cases of more moderate skin sagging, liposuction combined with the Renuvion skin tightening technique may be recommended.

How is a thigh lift performed?

Before the procedure

During your initial consultation, we will try to assess whether you really need a thigh lift or whether liposuction of the thighs would be sufficient. It is important to note that we always prefer liposuction because a thigh lift involves a visible scar that will remain for a long time. To do this, we will assess the amount of fat as well as the quality and quantity of skin on the thighs. We will also examine the presence of stretch marks and, above all, their location on the thighs. The examination also includes the groin area, the back of the thighs, and the knees.

If the skin is not very stretched, simple liposuction may be sufficient to correct the excess volume. In cases of moderate skin laxity, we can use our Renuvion technique, which tightens the skin and can reduce fine lines. This technique leaves only minimal scarring. If the skin is more lax and depending on the patient's request, a classic thigh lift will be recommended.

The areas to be treated will be marked and explained in front of a mirror. In the case of a lift with skin resection from the thighs, we will clearly mark where the scar will be so that the patient can understand its position. We will inform you about the procedure, the necessary tests, the anesthesia options, and the recovery process. A thigh lift can be performed under local anesthesia, but it is usually performed under deep sedation. To promote proper healing, it is recommended that you stop smoking at least 21 days before and after the procedure.

During the procedure

The operation is performed on an outpatient basis under general or local anesthesia with sedation. It lasts approximately 2 to 3 hours, depending on the amount of skin and fat to be removed. Before the procedure, while you are standing, we will mark the areas to be treated and take photos to document the process.

The scar is located on the inner thigh: we always try to choose areas where the scar will be as inconspicuous as possible. In some cases, an incision in the groin crease may be necessary. After disinfecting the areas, an infiltration solution is used to reduce the risk of bleeding. Liposuction is often performed in addition to removing excess skin.

To minimize the aesthetic impact, absorbable sutures are used (Vicryl, Monocryl), although scars in this area tend to widen over time. A compression garment is applied at the end of the procedure to reduce swelling and promote healing.

After the procedure

The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, so you can go home the same day. There is usually no drain. After the operation, you will wear a compression garment on your thighs for 4 weeks. Post-operative pain is moderate, similar to muscle soreness or tightness. During the first 3 weeks, you should avoid movements that pull on the scars, such as spreading your legs excessively. It is important to note that the scar is located in a crease between the thigh and the genital area, which is an area prone to moisture, heat, and maceration. Healing is therefore often longer and sometimes more difficult than elsewhere, with occasional episodes of scar opening in certain areas during the first few weeks.

Sports will be allowed after 8 weeks, and you will be able to shower one week after the procedure thanks to a special dressing. For office work, a return to work can be considered 3 to 4 days after the operation, while more physical professional activities require 1 to 3 weeks of rest depending on the intensity. This will be determined during the consultation. Exposure to the sun is not recommended until the scar has turned white, which can take 1 to 2 years.

We recommend specific scar care starting 3 weeks after the procedure, including creams, silicone patches, and massages. The final results are long-lasting, but it is important to maintain a stable weight to preserve the appearance achieved. Please note that scars may widen over time and take 1 to 2 years to turn white.

Risks and side effects

Like any procedure, a thigh lift may cause:

- healing difficulties: unfortunately, scar widening is more common, as explained above.
- bruising and swelling, which usually subsides within 3 weeks,
- fluid accumulation (seroma), as the inner thigh is an area with many lymphatic channels.
- Temporary sensitivity issues, which usually resolve after 3 to 6 months.
Serious complications, such as nerve or vascular damage, are rare.

General information

As we age, the skin on the thighs can become increasingly loose. Significant weight loss can also lead to sagging skin, but this can be corrected surgically by removing excess skin and fat from the inner thighs. The scar will be located on the inner thighs and will therefore not be visible during most everyday leg movements. Depending on the situation, liposuction may also be used in addition to a thigh lift.
