What does breast augmentation involve?
Breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgery procedure involving three distinct techniques:
- Breast augmentation using implants: this involves fitting breast prostheses, generally filled with silicone gel, which enable patients to obtain a firm, supple texture that is very natural to the breasts. This technique is the most frequently used at the Bellefontaine clinic.
- Breast augmentation by lipofilling: this technique involves injecting autologous fat into the breasts, i.e. injecting fat previously taken from another area of the patient’s body (usually the saddlebags, stomach and hip). Lipofilling produces natural, permanent results. However, this method imposes a limit on breast enlargement (it cannot exceed a small cup size and, as a general rule, it is possible to fill more than half a cup size).
- Composite breast augmentation: this technique is a combination of breast prosthesis and lipofilling.
When can I return to sport after breast augmentation?
Healing time varies depending on the method and the patient, and the final results are visible three to six months after the operation.
In the case of implants: Bruising appears in most cases for a fortnight following the operation. Oedema, i.e. swelling, varies from patient to patient and disappears after a few weeks. Swelling occurs mainly in the upper part of the breast, especially if the implant is placed under the muscle.
In the case of lipofilling: Ecchymosis (bruising) and oedema (swelling around the breasts) appear to varying degrees and disappear three to four weeks after the injection.
Patients can return to sport 8 weeks after breast augmentation with an implant. If they do not wait for this recovery time and practise sport beforehand, there is a risk that the implants will move downwards (a complication known as bottoming out) or to the side, resulting in an unsightly final result. We also recommend that when you return to sport 8 to 12 weeks after the operation, you use the bra you were given on the day of the operation. This is to reduce the risk of the implants migrating downwards. This is all the more important when using Motiva implants.
With regard to breast lipofilling: we recommend that you also resume sport 8 weeks after the operation. The risk is that the fat injected into the breasts will reabsorb to a greater extent if any physical activity involving vibration is practised during this recovery period.
At the Bellefontaine clinic, all our patients receive a precise protocol on these different recovery points.
