Why do I find it hard to lose certain types of localised fat?
The stubborn nature of certain localised fat deposits is partly due to the body’s natural tendency to favour certain areas of the body for storing the lipids it receives. This differentiated distribution of fat depends on the action of certain hormones, which explains why the areas of the body prone to fat accumulation differ between men and women.
This also explains why certain hormonal upheavals, such as a fall in testosterone levels in older men or those inherent in the menopause in women, can alter the way fat is distributed and lead to or accentuate the formation of persistent localised fat deposits.
However, while even the most intense efforts (low-calorie diets, regular exercise, etc.) sometimes have no effect on fat rolls, an unbalanced diet and lack of physical activity inevitably encourage the phenomenon in the medium and long term.
How does Cryolipolysis by Coolsculpting work in aesthetic medicine?
Cryolipolysis treatment is based on the effect induced by cold on fat cells. Below 4°C, these cells reach their freezing point and begin to die. Cryolipolysis therefore involves applying intense, regulated cold to the targeted fatty mass. The dead cells are then gradually eliminated by the body over a period of a few weeks. It is therefore a non-invasive technique that does not require any anaesthetic or social eviction.
Coolsculpting is a particularly sophisticated piece of cryolipolysis equipment, offering a very high degree of control and precision. Coolsculpting is a machine that is only available to doctors, and not in beauty salons, spas, etc. Equipped with applicators of various sizes and shapes, it can be used to treat many parts of the body, including the stomach, buttocks and thighs, but also the chin or the back of the knee. It blows cold down to -11 to -13 degrees into the fat cells. To date, it is the only cryolipolysis technology to have received CE marking and approval from the American public health authorities (the FDA).
Is cryolipolysis effective for weight loss?
Cryolipolysis aims to reshape the figure by reducing localised fatty deposits: it is not a treatment for excess weight and is even contraindicated in cases of obesity. A body mass index of 30 to 32 kg/m2 is not a good indication for coolsculpting.
How long does it take for the results of Cryolipolysis by Coolsculpting to become visible?
The results of a Cryolipolysis session begin to appear after around 2 months, the time needed for the metabolism to eliminate a significant proportion of the fat cells destroyed. The effects of the treatment generally reach their full potential after an average of 4 months, with a reduction in the size of the fat deposits treated of almost 25% on average. It should be noted, however, that in around 20% of patients treated, very few results are seen after 4 months.
How to optimise the results of Cryolipolysis by Coolsculpting?
During the 3-month period in which the body eliminates the fat cells destroyed by Cryolipolysis, it is important not to gain weight. Taking part in sporting activities and, more generally, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, will also guarantee optimal results. To improve the drainage of fat cells, patients can also massage the treated area for a few minutes a day in the weeks following the session. It is also important not to take any anti-inflammatory drugs before the treatment and, if possible, for 2 months afterwards, so as not to lose the natural inflammation process that evacuates the fat cells. Additional sessions can be repeated at intervals of at least 2 months.
